Acknowledging Presidents Day
AN HONEST LOOK at ABE:
LINCOLN at the DAWN OF THE
PHOTOGRAPHIC ERA

Presenter: Jim DelGiudice
Although Lincoln wasn’t the first president to be
photographed (he was the eleventh) he was our first true
“media” president. In fact, more than 100 photographs
still exist of Lincoln. In this lecture New Jersey
photojournalist Jim DelGiudice will discuss just what it
was that made a man—self-described as homely—such
an attractive subject to the photographers of the time.
Along with this discussion will be an examination of
press photography, its place in the industrial revolution,
and its evolution into today’s Internet and celebrity
photography.
Jim DelGiudice picked up a camera on graduating from the
Newhouse School in 1979 and has been documenting the
local scene ever since. A lifetime New Jersey resident, Jim
served as primary photographer for two books about New
Jersey architecture for Rutgers Press. Jim has won a share of
the NJ Historic Preservation Award three times and in 2000
was cited by both the state and county legislatures for his
lifetime contribution to the arts.
