Most people are aware that John Singer Sargent painted what was considered a scandalous portrait of “Madame X”.  (This painting is now in the Met.)  Very few people are aware of Sargent’s even more provocative portrait of Dr. Pozzi, the world’s first gynecologist.  Julian Barnes has written an entire book about Dr. Pozzi, the man in the red coat and the fascinating turn of the century Paris in which he lived.  Learn about the dapper doctor and the sensational painting.

Barbara Tomlinson received her B.A., cum laude, from Barnard College, her M.A.T. from Harvard University and her Ph. D., in American and Women’s History, from Rutgers. After serving for many years as history department chair at a small, independent secondary school, she moved to Kean University in 1986 to be a course-coordinator for the cultural history component of the General Education Program.  She retired from Kean in 2000 and now teaches cultural history in various continuing education programs around the state.
