OPERAS OF MOZART

Presenter: Robert Butts, PhD
Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 1:30PM

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created the first modern-type operas. He took the form that had become so popular and transformed it, changing the major vocal types and making the ensemble (duet, trio, quartet, etc.) a focal point of the dramatic energy. His operas have remained part of every opera company’s repertoire for over 200 years. The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Cosi fan tutte, his three operas with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, set new standards for the form while also adding dramatic depth related to the ideals of the Enlightenment. He created German-language opera with The Abduction from the Seraglio and The Magic Flute. From his first opera – Bastien und Bastienne written at the age of eleven! – to his last, Mozart’s operas continue to be favorites with artists and audiences alike.

Dr. Robert W. Butts serves as Music Director and Conductor with the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey and The New York Classical Music society.  He teaches at The Casperson School of Graduate Studies at Drew University and at Montclair State University.  As a composer, Dr. Butts has created popular works for orchestra, voice ad chamber ensembles.
