WAR AND PEACE: The 1940s
1940-1945 was marked by World War II. Swing music continued to be the most popular music in the world as people listened and danced to the music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and others. Concert composers wrote popular and inspiring music with works by Aaron Copeland, Oliver Messiaen, and Dimitri Shostakovich. There are many other composers whose works remain in every musician’s repertoire. Dance continued to thrive with new works by Copeland and Leonard Bernstein.
