1940-1945 was marked by World War II. Swing music continued to be the most popular music in the world as people listened and danced to the music of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and others. Concert composers wrote popular and inspiring music with works by Aaron Copeland, Oliver Messiaen, and Dimitri Shostakovich. There are many other composers whose works remain in every musician’s repertoire. Dance continued to thrive with new works by Copeland and Leonard Bernstein. Folk music grew in popularity with artists such as Lead Belly, Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Film classics featured scores by composers such as Bernard Hermann and Max Steiner.
